Sometimes we feel the urge to pat ourselves on the back, because we are so innovative and always come up with new creative ideas (hop over to our DIY category to see for yourself!). What can we say? Every now and then, self-praise IS a recommendation …
However, we also note that there are lots of people that are similarly or even equally as fascinated by cans as we are (not more though, of course). And from time to time, these people surprise us with canny innovations. That’s why we dedicate this blog post to all the cannovative minds out there that think outside the box and that make our can-loving-hearts pound.
Drumroll, please, Ladies and Gentlemen. It’s time for our top 3 canny innovations:
1. Pepsi X JLA AR Packaging Campaign
We thought, we’ve seen them all. All the fancy cans, the retro ones, colourful, Pokémon-themed … but what Pepsi and DC Comics developed tops it all: beverage cans with an augmented reality design. The trick is a pixel graphic on the can that reveals hidden superheroes that can battle each other. It was a highlight of this year’s San Diego Comic Con and we are devastated that we didn’t get the chance to try it. But as time has proven, this probably won’t be the last time augmented reality was used on a Pepsi can.
They already launched a similar packaging campaign within the context of the Super Bowl in 2014. The app ‘Now is What You Make It’ enabled the fans to unlock exclusive Pepsi video content and an augmented reality football game.
Pepsi has definitely mastered cannovations and we’re looking forward to their next big thing. You want to see for yourself? Check out the video below!
2. Super Fancy Fish Tins from “Eternal Oceans”
Cans don’t need a spacy new function to fascinate us. Sometimes we are happy with a little creativity when it comes to design. That’s why we absolutely love the beautiful new cans from “Eternal Oceans”. They come in different colours depending on their content and have a minimalistic but very pretty fish form. And they contain – who guessed it? – fish! To be precise, there’s Albacore Tuna, Sardinhas, and Wild Salmon. The pull tab that’s traditionally part of most cans, has the form of a fish tail and thus portrays a unique asset.
But the best is yet to come! With these fancy designs, Eternal Oceans promotes sustainable fishing. If you love fish and try to minimize the impact you have on the diminishing population of fish, this interview of Bart Van Olphen might be interesting for you.
3. Renewing an Oldie: The Self-Heating Can
The self-heating can is not an innovation, per se. The idea as well as the technology has been around since 1897, but for some reason, they were not really crowned with success. The US technology firm HeatGenie are trying to change that.
The main struggles have been that the cans were either too efficiently heating, or not efficiently enough. Tepid coffee might be fine in the summer, but when it’s freezing outside, I like my coffee scolding hot.
But now HeatGenie have optimised the innovation and are putting it back on the market. It seems that they have figured out the technical side and there is little in the way, before this ‘innovation’ will enter and hopefully improve our daily routines.
The can universe is constantly growing … and we love being a part of it! 🙂
